New BC Curriculum Drafts just posted on ministry website

This past spring and summer, 62 BCTF members were involved in drafting new curricula for K-9 English Language Arts, Français langue premiere, Français langue seconde immersion, Arts Education, Math, Science, Social Studies, Health and PE.

These teachers invested a tremendous amount of knowledge, time and energy, and also took on the significant responsibility of representing the professional voice of the Federation. We greatly appreciate their efforts. Thank you!

Ministry Websites and Information
Curriculum drafts for English Language Arts, Social Studies, and Math are now posted on the Ministry of Education website https://curriculum.gov.bc.ca/.

Science and Fine Arts drafts should be available shortly. The dates for the other areas have yet to be announced.

While the redesigned curricula are in draft format, all current provincial curricula and provincial examinations remain in place.

The ministry states there is no definite date for curriculum implementation, as it will depend on the feedback they receive from teachers. We encourage you to send your feedback to curriculum@gov.bc.ca.

For those of you using Twitter, teachers have already begun using the #bccurric hashtag to discuss the drafts. You can join the professional conversation there too, as well as the #bctfpd hashtag highlighting teachers’ activities during PSA Day this week.

BCTF Resources and Discussion Forum
The BCTF has created a wiki to support teachers by providing resources and information about curriculum development. Early curriculum drafts are also shared on the wiki. http://bctfcurriculumreps.pbworks.com.

The BCTF has also created a Curriculum Discussion Forum to enable teachers to share and discuss information and perspectives in a collegial and professional manner. You must first sign in to the BCTF member portal to participate in the forum. The link to the forum will be posted on www.bctf.ca/myBCTF/DiscussionBoard.aspx, and will be available by October 23, 2013.

As you know, these curricular changes will have significant impacts province-wide. Keeping ourselves well informed and working together means we can support one another as we explore the new curriculum drafts and related issues.
