December 6, 201412th Annual Shoe Memorial

December 6, 2014 is Canada’s National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, and we again ask you to look into your closets for women’s shoes.

It has been 25 years since fourteen women were selectively killed at the Ecole Polytechnique. Government and media no longer widely acknowledge this day. With your help, we will remember the over 726 women killed by violence in BC since then and those before.

There has been an amazing difference in the attitudes and reactions of the public since our first Shoe Memorial, and in particular, since the struggle to erect the Marker of Change. But, women and girls are still dying needlessly, so again, we are collecting shoes and building our Memorial at the Vancouver Art Gallery. Other groups join us across Canada building Shoe Memorials, so that we never forget.

Our common goal is “that the names of the victims should never be forgotten. They are represented by a pair of shoes and their names displayed.

After the memorial, the shoes are given, both directly and indirectly, to women in need. Working collectively, we believe we can have a greater impact.
